Why I think “Karma” is real and yet I am a Christian!

I am a Christian by choice who, by the Grace of God, tries to understand the realities of the spiritual world as well as the physical one. I believe the Bible is the most truthful and factual Book in explaining all the realities of the Cosmos—The universe and its contents. However, there is a belief that is not Christian and yet I found it real to some extent—The Karma.

According to a wide range of dictionaries, “Karma” is a belief held by Hinduism and Buddhism referred to as “the sum of a person's actions [in this and previous states of existence] viewed as deciding their fate [in future existences].” (Note that I don’t believe in the elements mentioned in […] as they are unchristian for the Bible doesn’t teach of previous existences that Hinduism/Buddhism believe).

It took me sometime to understand what Karma is until I read of its origin. I came to realize that it’s real to a greater extent and can be applied to almost all the domains of life. I would extrapolate “Karma” as the principle of “we reap what we sow” to make it friendly to everyone—including my fellow Christians.

The principle of “we reap what we sow” portrays the fact that the current state of things is proportional to the choices made in the past and the future state of things will be proportional to the current choices. If we sow hatred, we will inevitably reap evil. If we sow love, we will reap accordingly. Some may counter-react the above argument with a possibility of luck and injustice that exists in our world, but still the “we reap what we sow” principle remains valid.

From the minor act of gossiping in the back of a close friend to the direct accusations of the same, the effect will inevitably be the loss of friendship. From the subconscious neglect of having quality time with your child, the effect will be having a long-distance-relationship with the same. From the simple gesture of looking-down on someone in his/her time of need, the result will be missing the help from the same in your time of need.

From the minor act of cheating in class, the future result will be failing to save someone’s life—including yourself—due to the lack of knowledge and skills. From the minor act of having sex with your ‘Boss’ for the sake of securing a certain job position, the result will be losing the same job in the absence of that ‘Boss’. From the minor act of saying “I do” during the wedding-vows knowing that you already have side-chick affairs, the result will be divorce and making both your innocent spouse and children more miserable—if not your own suicide.

From the minor act of not paying back that little amount you owe someone, the result will be losing the lifetime trust you were bestowed with. From the minor act of always procrastinating your due affection toward your partner, the result will be having a remorseful heart when it will be too late to see him/her again.

From the minor act of making little lies to your faithful companion, the result will be losing the lifetime engagement you both had. From the little act of fraudulently feeding your one-minute need, the result will be losing even your everything. From the minor act of skipping that due class lecture for the sake of sipping on the wine glass as you hang-out with your friends, the result will be aborting your lifetime career progress. From the minor act of faking that required document to secure a certain benefit, the result will be finding yourself in the middle of metallic chains, in jail.

The list can be very long and hard to exhaust, but one simple take-home message is “Mind about the choices you make today before the Karma teaches you harsh lessons.”

See you next!
